Khanmigo alternatives

The Aristotle team

Aristotle, ChatGPT study mode, Gemini Guided Learning, Photomath, Synthesis Tutor, Quizlet, and Duolingo Max are Khanmigo alternatives a family can start without a district deal. Aristotle is a voice AI tutor for middle and high school students. Students talk through problems out loud on a shared whiteboard, and the tutor asks questions rather than giving answers. Khanmigo still fits when the homework already lives in Khan Academy.

How we compared

We compared each product on five things a parent can check on the vendor's own site: voice interaction, question-led tutoring, subjects covered, grade levels, and whether a free tier exists. Free tier is yes or no. If a public page does not say, the table marks that cell unclear. This is a list, not a ranking.

What is Khanmigo?

Khanmigo is Khan Academy's AI tutor. It sits on that library and, in Khan Academy's words, never gives the answer. Students can talk or type. Speech-to-text and text-to-speech are built in. The public site says it covers elementary through college, across math, science, coding, history, and humanities, plus writing and college-admissions help.

A family can start it without a school. The Khan Academy library stays free. Khanmigo for learners is a paid add-on. Classroom student seats still go through a school or district.

1. Aristotle

Aristotle is a voice AI tutor for middle and high school students, and open to anyone who wants to learn. Students talk through problems out loud on a shared whiteboard. The tutor asks questions rather than giving answers.

Students have completed more than 5,000 sessions and 100,000 minutes of tutoring with it. Intro is free with three sessions. Scholar is eight sessions a month. Infinite is $199 a month, unlimited, with a one-week free trial. The published plans are on the pricing page.

It fits a family that wants a middle or high school student to work through tonight's homework out loud, including work that is not in Khan Academy.

2. ChatGPT study mode

ChatGPT study mode is a setting in ChatGPT. OpenAI says it can ask questions, walk through a problem, and check understanding instead of only returning a final answer. You can turn it off. Study mode is available on the free ChatGPT plan.

You can dictate a question by voice. ChatGPT also has a separate voice chat. It is a general assistant. It is not built around a shared classroom whiteboard.

It fits a student who already lives in ChatGPT and wants a study setting that tries to slow the answer down.

3. Gemini Guided Learning

Gemini Guided Learning is a mode in Google's Gemini app. Google says it uses probing questions and step-by-step breakdowns, and that it will work through homework with a student rather than doing the work for them. It can add images, videos, and quizzes.

Google's public pages do not say whether Guided Learning itself is a live spoken tutor. Gemini Live is a separate product. Guided Learning is available in the Gemini app.

It fits a student who already uses Gemini and wants a question-led study mode across whatever they type.

4. Photomath

Photomath is a camera math solver. You scan a problem, including many word problems, and it shows the steps. The public site says it covers elementary through college math. There is a free Basic app.

It is not a voice tutor and it is not question-led. The point of the app is the solution.

It fits a student who is stuck on one equation and wants to see the steps.

5. Synthesis Tutor

Synthesis Tutor is a 1:1 AI math tutor for elementary students. The public site says it covers K-5 math, reads text aloud, and sends progress reports. Starting is a trial, not an ongoing free plan.

It teaches its own lessons. It does not claim to tutor middle and high school subjects, and it is not a homework chatbot for tonight's worksheet.

It fits a younger student who needs elementary math, not a Khanmigo replacement for middle or high school work.

6. Quizlet

Quizlet is a study app. Flashcards, practice tests, study guides, and AI homework help sit on top of sets and notes. Some of that is free. Quizlet describes homework help as step-by-step explanations and concept breakdowns, not a live tutor.

There is no live tutor voice. Audio on a flashcard is not the same thing.

It fits a student who needs to remember terms, not someone who needs to talk through a proof.

7. Duolingo Max

Duolingo Max adds AI Roleplay and Video Call to Duolingo. Video Call is a spoken practice conversation in the language you are learning. The rest of Duolingo is a language course. There is no free Max tier. The base Duolingo app is the free product.

It is a language app, not a math, science, or SAT tutor.

It fits language practice. It is not a school-subject stand-in for Khanmigo.

Which one should you start with?

Stay with Khanmigo if Khan Academy is already the homework. Use Photomath for one scanned equation, Quizlet for flashcards, Synthesis Tutor for elementary math, and Duolingo Max for languages. Use ChatGPT study mode or Gemini Guided Learning if the student already lives in those apps and you accept a general assistant.

Try Aristotle if you want a middle or high school student to talk through the work on a whiteboard. Intro is three free sessions.

Questions parents ask

What are Khanmigo alternatives?

Aristotle, ChatGPT study mode, Gemini Guided Learning, Photomath, Synthesis Tutor, Quizlet, and Duolingo Max. Aristotle is a voice AI tutor for middle and high school students. Students talk through problems out loud on a shared whiteboard, and the tutor asks questions rather than giving answers.

How is Aristotle different from Khanmigo?

Khanmigo is built around Khan Academy content. Families can start it without a school, and classroom seats go through a district. Aristotle is a voice tutor on a shared whiteboard that families start themselves. Both try to tutor instead of dump answers. Aristotle is the one that talks out loud on a live whiteboard.

Does Khanmigo work outside of school?

Yes. A family can start Khanmigo without a school account. The Khan Academy library stays free. Khanmigo for learners is a paid add-on. Teacher accounts do not unlock student seats. Districts can buy classroom access separately.

Does Aristotle have a free way to start?

Yes. Intro is free with three sessions. Infinite has a one-week free trial of unlimited sessions. Scholar is eight sessions a month.

Is Aristotle question-led like Khanmigo?

Both products describe themselves as tutors rather than answer engines. Aristotle is built to ask questions on a live whiteboard and not hand over the solution. Khanmigo does that inside Khan Academy's lessons. The difference is the live whiteboard, and whether the homework lives in Khan.

Which option fits SAT or AP prep?

Aristotle tutors SAT, ACT, AP, and IB on the same account as school subjects. Khanmigo's SAT and AP coverage follows whatever is in Khan Academy. If your child already uses Official SAT Practice on Khan, Khanmigo may be the shorter path. If you want a voice tutor that is not tied to that library, use Aristotle.

Is Aristotle built for middle and high school students?

Yes. Aristotle is a voice AI tutor for middle and high school students, and open to anyone who wants to learn.
